The “National Engineering Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmaceutical Process Technology and New Drugs Innovation”, established by Guangzhou Hanfang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. as the legal entity, was renamed from the formal “National Engineering Research Center for Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine Extraction and Separation Process”. It got the approval of National Development and Reform Commission in 2004, passed the acceptance with high standard and obtained the license for operation in 2007, and became one of 191 national engineering research centers included in the new sequence management in 2021. It is a national science and technology innovation base serving the development and achievements transformation and application of traditional Chinese medicine. The Hanfang National Engineering Research Center has carried out a series of research and achievements transformation around the key “bottleneck” issues such as the backward pharmaceutical process technology of traditional Chinese medicine and the lack of raw material & excipients for high-end preparations, and has played a good radiation, demonstration and promotion role in the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine pharmaceutical process and the improvement of its quality control level. At the same time, the Center is committed to serving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, facilitating Macao's diversified development and promoting the internationalization process of traditional Chinese medicine.

After being included in the new sequence management, the technical research direction of Hanfang National Engineering Research Center has been adjusted to: (1) developing the application of advanced extraction and separation technology in the pharmaceutical process of traditional Chinese medicine, and carrying out system integration, engineering validation, demonstration and promotion; enhancing the integrated innovation of pharmaceutical engineering technology and information technology, and improving the automation, digitalization and intelligence level of pharmaceutical process; (2) focusing on the development of large-scale and efficient separation and preparation technology of traditional Chinese medicine ingredients, promoting the R&D and industrialization of innovative drugs with definite efficacy and high clinical value, and promoting the upgrade of products, technology and quality of listed varieties; (3) focusing on the development of new series of raw material & excipients such as oil and phospholipids for injection, new injection administration systems of fat emulsion, liposome, lipid microspheres and nano preparation, oral modulated release administration systems such as oral rapid release, sustained and controlled release system, and other industrial technologies, so as to promote China's high-end preparations to reach the international advanced level.

In the future, Hanfang National Engineering Research Center will take the national and industrial strategic needs as the starting point, aim at the inheritance and innovative development of traditional Chinese medicine, focus on the “bottleneck” technical problems in the development course of the industry, and build itself into a national strategic scientific and technological force that improves the efficiency of industrial innovation and promotes the deep integration of the innovation chain and industry chain; rely on the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, create an innovation highland of traditional Chinese medicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and contribute to the goal of becoming a leading innovative country and a world science and technology power!
